Setting Up My 2026 Planner: First Impressions, Small Choices and What I’m Trying ๐Ÿคž

First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR!! ๐ŸŽ‰
I wish you all the best for 2026, especially health, love, happiness, and more cute stationery than you could ever use in a lifetime! ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ“Ž

Now, on with the show!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Today’s Post

I received my 2026 planner months agoโ€ฆ and until now, I hadnโ€™t even opened it (except to take a few pictures for a previous post). ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ“˜ A brand-new planner always brings a mix of excitement and mild panic โ€” especially when youโ€™re trying a totally new layout.

After years of vertical layouts, I decided to switch to a dashboard layout. So here I am, sitting at my desk with my plannerโ€ฆ feeling equal parts happy and nervous. โœจ

But the new year isnโ€™t waiting, so letโ€™s dive in! ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ“– The Blank Planner Moment

As an author, Iโ€™m not afraid of a blank pageโ€ฆ but a blank planner page? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

For weeks, I thought, โ€œIโ€™ll add that to my planner when I set it up.โ€ Now that itโ€™s setup time, my mind went completely blank. (Note to self: write must-add ideas somewhere else first! ๐Ÿ˜‚)

This is where the dashboard layout helps. Guided sections like Goals, Priorities, and Important Dates make it easy to ease into planning mode. ๐Ÿ–‹๏ธโœจ

๐Ÿ’ฆ Cannonball!

To avoid overthinking, I start with the lowest-hanging fruit ๐ŸŽ:

  • Since my planner is undated, I add the dates to each monthly spread
  • I write the month’s names in colors I associate with them: January = gray-blue ๐Ÿ’™, February = pink ๐ŸŒธ, March = lavender ๐Ÿ’œ, etc.
  • And I fill in fixed events like birthdays, bills, and appointments

By then, my planner is looking a little less intimidating and a little more mine. ๐Ÿ’–

๐ŸŽฏ Goal!

Next, I tackle the Goal page! ๐ŸŽฏ I fill in the Priorities and Take Note sections with things I want to remember and focus on, like health, connection, or new rituals. Anything that will make me look back and think, โ€œNow THAT was a good month!โ€ โœจ๐Ÿ’–

Now that my priorities are clear, I finally feel ready to think about goals. Knowing what I want to focus on throughout the month helps me set measurable goals. ๐Ÿ“

To keep things flexible, I use the Good / Better / Best system (borrowed from author Sarra Cannon). It gives me room to adapt and a way to โ€œrateโ€ my month without pressure. ๐ŸŒŸ

For example, if health is a January priority and weight loss is one of my goals, it might look like this: Lose 5 / 10 / 15 lbs in January. โš–๏ธ

It gives me something to aim for, without turning the whole month into a pass-or-fail situation. โœ…๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ“… New Layout

Now for my first ever dashboard weekly spread! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ“’

Unlike vertical layouts, I donโ€™t overstuff tasks anymore. Fixed events go in the daily boxes on the right-hand page, and weekly tasks go in the To-Do / Priorities list on the left. ๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ

I can add little reminders in Important and leave the Looking Ahead section blank for now. Iโ€™ll fill it in as the week progresses with future tasks or more notes. โฉ

As for the Notes section, since itโ€™s gridded, itโ€™s perfect for a mini weekly habit tracker! ๐Ÿ‘€โœจ The impatient child in me doesnโ€™t like monthly or yearly trackers ๐Ÿ˜…, which usually end up abandoned halfwayโ€ฆ but a weekly tracker? Totally doable! ๐ŸŽฏ

๐ŸŽ€ Decoration

Of course, no spread would be complete without some decoration! โœจ
This is honestly my favorite part. I love digging through my sticker and washi tape collection, finding the perfect mood for the week, and filling in the blanks with cute or cheerful details. ๐ŸŒˆ

For me, decoration isnโ€™t extra โ€” itโ€™s what makes planning fun and something I actually look forward to coming back to every day. ๐Ÿ’Œ๐Ÿ“–

๐Ÿ’ญ Final Thoughts

This is just the beginning of my 2026 planning journey, and I know things will shift as the year unfolds. And thatโ€™s okay. ๐ŸŒฑ

If youโ€™re starting a new planner this month too, Iโ€™d love to know: Are you setting everything up at onceโ€ฆ or easing into it slowly?

However youโ€™re starting, I hope your planner brings you little sparks of happiness every time you open it this year. โœจ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ’•
