Setting Up My 2026 Planner: First Impressions, Small Choices and What I’m Trying πŸ€ž

First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR!! πŸŽ‰
I wish you all the best for 2026, especially health, love, happiness, and more cute stationery than you could ever use in a lifetime! πŸ’–πŸ“Ž

Now, on with the show!

πŸ‘‰ Today’s Post

I received my 2026 planner months ago… and until now, I hadn’t even opened it (except to take a few pictures for a previous post). πŸ˜…πŸ“˜ A brand-new planner always brings a mix of excitement and mild panic β€” especially when you’re trying a totally new layout.

After years of vertical layouts, I decided to switch to a dashboard layout. So here I am, sitting at my desk with my planner… feeling equal parts happy and nervous. ✨

But the new year isn’t waiting, so let’s dive in! πŸ’›

πŸ“– The Blank Planner Moment

As an author, I’m not afraid of a blank page… but a blank planner page? 😬

For weeks, I thought, β€œI’ll add that to my planner when I set it up.” Now that it’s setup time, my mind went completely blank. (Note to self: write must-add ideas somewhere else first! πŸ˜‚)

This is where the dashboard layout helps. Guided sections like Goals, Priorities, and Important Dates make it easy to ease into planning mode. πŸ–‹οΈβœ¨

πŸ’¦ Cannonball!

To avoid overthinking, I start with the lowest-hanging fruit 🍎:

  • Since my planner is undated, I add the dates to each monthly spread
  • I write the month’s names in colors I associate with them: January = gray-blue πŸ’™, February = pink 🌸, March = lavender πŸ’œ, etc.
  • And I fill in fixed events like birthdays, bills, and appointments

By then, my planner is looking a little less intimidating and a little more mine. πŸ’–

🎯 Goal!

Next, I tackle the Goal page! 🎯 I fill in the Priorities and Take Note sections with things I want to remember and focus on, like health, connection, or new rituals. Anything that will make me look back and think, β€œNow THAT was a good month!” βœ¨πŸ’–

Now that my priorities are clear, I finally feel ready to think about goals. Knowing what I want to focus on throughout the month helps me set measurable goals. πŸ“

To keep things flexible, I use the Good / Better / Best system (borrowed from author Sarra Cannon). It gives me room to adapt and a way to β€œrate” my month without pressure. 🌟

For example, if health is a January priority and weight loss is one of my goals, it might look like this: Lose 5 / 10 / 15 lbs in January. βš–οΈ

It gives me something to aim for, without turning the whole month into a pass-or-fail situation. βœ…πŸ’ͺ

πŸ“… New Layout

Now for my first ever dashboard weekly spread! πŸ₯°πŸ“’

Unlike vertical layouts, I don’t overstuff tasks anymore. Fixed events go in the daily boxes on the right-hand page, and weekly tasks go in the To-Do / Priorities list on the left. πŸ—‚οΈπŸ–‹οΈ

I can add little reminders in Important and leave the Looking Ahead section blank for now. I’ll fill it in as the week progresses with future tasks or more notes. ⏩

As for the Notes section, since it’s gridded, it’s perfect for a mini weekly habit tracker! πŸ‘€βœ¨ The impatient child in me doesn’t like monthly or yearly trackers πŸ˜…, which usually end up abandoned halfway… but a weekly tracker? Totally doable! 🎯

πŸŽ€ Decoration

Of course, no spread would be complete without some decoration! ✨
This is honestly my favorite part. I love digging through my sticker and washi tape collection, finding the perfect mood for the week, and filling in the blanks with cute or cheerful details. 🌈

For me, decoration isn’t extra β€” it’s what makes planning fun and something I actually look forward to coming back to every day. πŸ’ŒπŸ“–

πŸ’ Final Thoughts

This is just the beginning of my 2026 planning journey, and I know things will shift as the year unfolds. And that’s okay. 🌱

If you’re starting a new planner this month too, I’d love to know: Are you setting everything up at once… or easing into it slowly?

However you’re starting, I hope your planner brings you little sparks of happiness every time you open it this year. βœ¨πŸ“–πŸ’•
